Turnaround Time

How many people talk during the recording/s?

The more people that are taking part in the audio recording, the longer a project will take to transcribe. Higher rates apply for more than two speakers.

Are the recordings difficult to hear?*

Broadcast Newsroom Quality – No extra time or resources needed.

Faint/Some background noise – Typist will need to listen several times to some passages.

Very faint/Frequent background noise – Typist will need to listen many times to some passages to decipher what is being said.

Standard Intelligent Verbatim: concise and clearer to read; more like a written English; most common. Used in courts, and nearly all research. Most common.
Strict Verbatim: includes all aspects of spoken English: ums, ers, repetition, active listening. It is mainly used in certain types of research.

De-Identify Participants to Protect Anonymity*

Yes. Best practice. Often – legally required.

Most Australian University research policy recommends de-identifying private information. Our de-identification process aligns with CSIRO (the Australian Government agency responsible for scientific research in Australia).

Depth of De-identification

Remove Speaker Names – replace with “Interviewer” “Respondent 1” etc.

Remove Personal Names in transcript – replace with [personal name]

Remove Org. or Business Names in transcript – replace with [org. name]

Remove Dates, e.g. dates of birth, admission dates in transcript – replace with [date]

Remove Telephone Numbers in transcript – replace with [telephone]

Remove Email in transcript – replace with [email]

Select which types of commonly used personal identifiers that you want replaced with placeholders, e.g. John Smith > [personal name]. The simplest form of de-identification would remove the speakers’ names only (first box).

English Second Language Speakers/Strong Accents/Speech Difficulty*

For a variety of reasons, speakers can be hard to understand. Strong regional accents, English as a second language, or simply just speaking fast can mean the typist has to slow the audio down, and replay passages to decipher what is being said. The rate that we charge you must reflect this additional time.
